We have several sayings that don't make sense... That's for the birds is one of them. They are fed the most marvelous of seeds in our feeders.
It's so much fun to watch them. We have flickers, blue jays, junkos, finches, downy woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, and a plethora of sparrows.
Today, because it is relatively warm, they are out in force.
Take care.

Before the automobile, there were lots of horses aroung in towns, and the birds liked to pick at their droppings. So 'for the birds' came to be known as something useless. The original saying was 'that's shit for the birds', but was changed through the years.

Carol Jean --that was before the autos. Shit is hardly noticed anymore --it seems to be part of the vocabulary and mild compared to lots of the vocabulary now. My father took exception to gee and gosh, We were to find better words to utter. They did have autos when I was a child but born in 1920 I have lived through a lot of language changes. Besides expletives I have friends who find
"awesome" jarring. Fran
I envy you with all those beautiful birds in your back yard. I wouldn't even be able to name them. I have birds which are plentiful when looking out the bedroom window here. they are the useless kind. Pigeons I think--large birds which perch on the tops of buildings and definitely come under the "for the birds" not for eating but for shitting,.and also are covered by the plethora designation. So glad to see your blogs.. Your writing talent is so "neat", Fran.
I think my comment is totally useless today so it is for the birds. I am patiently waiting for spring to arrive so that the hummingbirds, robins and others return.
OK Vicki, I think we have been fairly patient. .. . time to get on the stick spit out another blog!!
